Sing-along-to-The Sound of Music

Had Oscar Hammerstein 11 (worth one point in the quiz) lived long enough to be in the Village Hall last month. he'd have been tempted to rewrite his most famous lyric.
Not just sound - it was a visual feast, with Tyrolean scenes adorning the walls and an audience decked out in a mix of lederhosen, wimples and green plastic hats. The scents of popcorn and hotdogs added the authentic atmosphere of the cinema. And with two screens in operation, Towersey could at last boast its own multiplex.
The over-critical might say some of our nuns looked a little too frisky; maybe some of the interjections from the back of the hall were a little lacking in respect for an officer of the Austrian Navy; but then, isn't Austria landlocked? However, the singing from all quarters was bright, enthusiastic and heartfelt. No doubt the ministrations of Mother Abbess behind the bar helped.
It was a wonderful evening - the kind this village runs so well: good company, good fun and an impressive amount of money raised in a good cause.

Ken Bruce.

The organisers of the evening would like to thank all those people gave up their time to help make this an enjoyable and successful evening - we are delighted to report that a profit of nearly £700 was made for St.Catherine's Church towards paying off the debt incurred on the tower repairs and for overhauling the church clock.

WHAT A PARTY!!! On the first Sunday of the New Year, 56 of the village’s older residents descended on the Village Hall at 12.30, for what was to prove to be an afternoon full of food, fun and laughter.
Yes, it was the annual Senior Citizens’ Lunch. The guests were greeted by attentive waiting staff with either a glass of sherry or a glass of sparkling wine whilst they listened to the sublime sounds of ‘Sounds Familiar’ a barber’s vocal quartet headed by Jean Digby from Manor Road. Then, as the kitchen roared into action, a starter of smoked salmon was followed by roast pork with all the trimmings (as always expertly carved by Jim and Arthur – for which we thank you enormously), finished off with lemon tart and cream. The guests sat around tables laid with crackers and wonderful decorations made by Melanie Walsh, and were all presented with gorgeously presented bundles of sweets.
As coffee with a variety of liqueurs was served, we were treated to more wonderful singing from ‘Sounds Familiar’, before the village hall began to tremble with the sound of many pairs of feet boogying the afternoon away to Abba, Tom Jones and many more!!
Every guest seemed to have a wonderful time, and of course none of it would have been possible without the vast army of volunteers (some guests as well!) who did everything from preparing vegetables, roasting potatoes, making lemon tarts, laying the tables, serving all the food, washing up literally hundreds of plates, glasses and pieces of cutlery to washing the kitchen floor at the end of a long day. There are too many people to mention here, but to each and every one of you – thank you so much for your help – we couldn’t have done it without you.
